The cumulative air traffic from January to the end of May 2019 increased by 8.51%, with double-digit growth for Marrakech Menara airports (+20.80%), Fez Saiss (+11.05%), Tangier Ibn Battouta (+13.73%), Rabat Salé (+15.34%) and Dakhla (+30.09%).
According to data from the National Airport Authority (ONDA), in May 2019, the Kingdom’s airports recorded a volume of commercial traffic of 1,624,451 passengers, a decrease of 3.41% compared to the same period last year. This fall was predictable due to the effect of the holy month of Ramadan, said the source.
Marrakech Menara airport registered a strong increase of 16.12% by welcoming 491,472 passengers.
According to the same source, domestic traffic registered a decrease of about 3.13% compared to the same period of 2018. It reached 177,719 passengers. With 1,446,732 passengers welcomed, international air traffic also decreased by 3.45% compared to the same period of the previous year.
The European market, which accounts for about 80% of total international air traffic, also declined by 1.65%. The same applies to air traffic with the markets of the Middle and Far East, Africa, the Maghreb countries and South America. In contrast, the North American market recorded an increase of 5.17%.
During the month of May 2019, there were 14,952 aircraft movements, an increase of 3.43% compared to the same period of 2018. The share of Mohammed V airport is 42.30 % of this traffic, Marrakech Menara 23.80% and Agadir Al Massira 7.55%.
The traffic of commercial aircraft flying over the Moroccan airspace during May 2019, has evolved in the order of 2.87% compared to the same period last year. It has thus established 17 219 movements.
Freight traffic, meanwhile, recorded during May 2019 a sharp increase of 26.92% compared to the same period of the previous year, with 9,657,320 tonnes in May 2019 against 7,608,900 tons the same month of the previous year.
