AliPay arrives in Morocco

Thanks to AliPay, the CMI aims to contribute to developing Chinese tourism activity in Morocco.

The “Center Monétique Interbancaire” (CMI) diversifies its partnerships. This time, he joins forces with AfricaPass to launch the AliPay payment solution in Morocco.

Through this partnership, the CMI aims to increase the turnover of Moroccan traders by capturing more payments from Chinese tourists. Because, as Mikael Naciri, CEO of CMI points out, AliPay is a payment path with which they are already familiar. “The trader will pay a commission of 1.8% excluding tax for a transaction paid by AliPay against 2.5% for a transaction with a credit card. For a trader, it remains very advantageous,” says the general manager.

With AliPay, the Center intends to boost Chinese tourism in Morocco. In 2018, a national of the Middle Kingdom spent an average of MAD 2900 with his card, 65% more than the other tourists of the kingdom. In addition, forecasts show 500,000 Chinese tourists expected to the kingdom by 2021. Hence the bet of the CMI to endow the maximum number of payment terminal traders AliPay.

Through its partnership with AfricaPass, CMI aims to roll out the project of acceptance of payments via AliPay. The goal is to support Moroccan merchants in their digitization and equipment. Deployment of payment terminals is underway in Casablanca, Rabat and Marakech. It will affect other cities of the kingdom, including Chefchaouen, a city popular with the Chinese.

A subsidiary of Alibaba Global Group and Ant Financial Services Group, AliPay is one of the world’s leading mobile and digital payment platforms. It is particularly popular in China through the wallet system, the electronic wallet on Smartphone. With over a billion users, this solution represents a real opportunity for the development of the economy related to Chinese tourism in Morocco, says the CMI.

As a reminder, AfricaPass is a Moroccan company specializing in the implementation of technological and digital solutions for Chinese tourism in Morocco and Africa. Among other things, it provides mobile payment solutions.
