AMU: Morocco denounces the attitude of Algeria

The problems facing the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU) are dependent on the tension that marks the bilateral relations between Algeria and Morocco, said Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, noting that there will not be regional integration without bilateral relations and closed borders.

Bourita, who was the guest of the show “Bila Houdoud” (Without Borders), on Al Jazeera, recalled that King Mohammed VI had called in his speech of November 6 last, Algeria to a direct dialogue, noting that this policy of the outstretched hand “finds its foundation in the personal conviction of HM the King” as to the sincere will of the Moroccan and Algerian peoples to open a new page in the bilateral relations.

And to add, in this sense, that the king has proposed for this purpose the establishment of a flexible mechanism whose level, object and nature are to be agreed with Algeria, and which will be “a space of bilateral dialogue” where all the problems will be examined without intermediary.

The AMU countries have missed several opportunities, the minister said, noting that after 35 meetings of foreign ministers and 100 technical committee meetings nothing has been achieved and the Arab Maghreb remains today the weakest zone in terms of economic integration, a situation that causes each of its countries to lose 2% of the growth rate each year and allocates 34% of GNP.
