Atlas Lions: Who will replace Hervé Renard?

Football fans in Morocco have still not digested the Atlas Lions fiasco at the 2019 AfCON. Everyone expected to see the national team lift the trophy, but the selection has not gone beyond the round of 16.

After the official departure of Hervé Renard, which coach will he take the reins of Lions? This is the question that currently haunts the minds of Moroccan fans.

Several names are on the FRMF table. This is Houssin Ammouta, who won the Champions League with Wydad in 2017, the French technician Laurent Blanc and the Bosnian Vahid Halilodzic.

Recall that Hervé Renard announced Saturday, July 20 on his official page that he leaves the Atlas Lions. The French coach wrote a long message to make his announcement and to thank the supporters who supported him during these years.

“Morocco will always remain for me a country with which I have lived incredible emotions and with which I will have remained the longest continuous link to date. Nearly 3 years and half, 41 months to be precise, intense moments shared with players that I sincerely love, a dedicated staff and all Moroccan fans during this beautiful period,” he said.

He added: “It was a great adventure started in the anonymity of a return from Cape Verde to Egypt via Gabon and Russia, and that the progression of the team, since the 81st place FIFA in 2016 to today, has created important ambitions in the hearts of a whole people and Moroccan fans. I am proud of what we have achieved and how far we have managed to hoist Moroccan football. In addition to our FIFA ranking (47th), we have twice reached the second round of the AfCON, including a 1/4 final, a performance achieved since 2004; but also a participation in the 2018 World Cup in Russia after 20 years of absence for Morocco, an unforgettable first for me”.

Hervé Renard continued: “Yes, we all hoped for better this 2019 edition of the AfCON in Egypt, but football is so, it gives birth to the wildest hopes (after 3 wins in pool, a first in the finals of AfCON for Morocco), and brings us hard to the reality of a too fast elimination on penalties …! So, it is time for me to close this long and beautiful chapter of my life, not without some emotion and sadness, but it is an inevitable decision taken well before AfCON 2019. Thank you to the players, the staff, the fans, to the honest journalists and all those who brought me and especially showed their support. Dima Morocco!”
