Based on 14 indicators in four categories “Greenhouse gas emissions”, “Renewable energy”, “Energy consumption” and “Climate policy”, the 2019 Climate Change Performance Index has given Morocco a score of 70.48 behind Sweden which scored a score of 76.28 and which leads in a total of 56 countries.
“Morocco wins a place to become the second best performing country of this year’s Climate Change Performance Index, ranking fifth (the top 3 places were not awarded),” note Germanwatch, New Climate Institute and Climate Action Network, the authors of the Index. This performance is due to the “considerable” increase in renewable energies over the last five years.
“The country is on track to reach its goal of 42 percent renewable energy capacity installed in 2020 and 52 percent by 2030”. Note the consideration of the low CO2 emissions and the Kingdom’s commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 42% as part of its national commitments to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
