The Ethics and Discipline Committee of Conmebol has decided to punish Lionel Messi with a suspension match and a $ 1,500 fine, because of his altercation with Chilean defender Gary Medel during the small final of Copa America played on July 6th.
The decision was announced on the official website of the South American Confederation. “There is no appeal against this decision,” said the court. He added that the penalty refers to Article 12.1 of the Conmebol Disciplinary Rules: “Violations and sanctions of inappropriate behavior of players and officials”.
The case is not yet closed and Messi big risk. The Discipline Committee still has to rule on the criticisms of the Pulga against Conmebol and the refereeing of the competition. The five-fold Golden Ball had accused the referees of “corruption” and stressed that everything was programmed to favor Brazil.
The Argentine Federation was quick to react to these remarks and said that when Messi spoke of “corruption”, he was referring to the refereeing and not the organization of the tournament or Conmebol. Messi also sent a letter of apology, evoking “emotional stress” after the elimination.
Note that the teammates of the Pulga were eliminated against Brazil in the semifinals, before winning against Uruguay in a classification match.
