Coronavirus: Towards an epidemiological relapse in Morocco?

After a continuous decline for several months, the curve of Covid-19 infections is taking the opposite path in Morocco. The number of positive cases and hospitalizations have increased slightly in recent days, causing concern among many Moroccans.

According to data from the Ministry of Health, the kingdom is experiencing an epidemic rebound. On Tuesday, more than 135 new contaminations were reported in 24 hours, while the figures did not exceed 50 cases a few days ago. The occupancy rate of intensive care beds also fell from 0.2% to 0.4% in one week.

In a statement, the coordinator of the National Center for Public Health Emergency Operations at the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, Mouad Mrabet indicated that this increase is to be watched closely. “Unsurprisingly, Covid-19 cases have increased over the past few days. The figures are not worrying, since the positivity rate has gone from minus 1% to 1.5%, but we must closely monitor this situation,” he explained.

And to emphasize that “we must also monitor the criticality of Covid-19 cases. Apart from the increase in cases of contamination, we must monitor the criticality of this increase and know if there will also be an increase in serious cases,” he said.

According to the scientist, Morocco is not the only one to face this resurgence of cases. Several countries are facing the same situation, especially with the resumption of flights and the relaxation of barrier measures. In this regard, Mrabet recommends vigilance and the importance of continuing the booster dose of vaccination.
