The World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday warned that the health crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic has reached “a critical juncture” and expressed concern at an exponential increase in cases in many countries.
“We are at a critical juncture in the pandemic, especially in the northern hemisphere,” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference in Geneva.
He said that the next few months “will be very difficult”, noting that “some countries are on a dangerous track”.
“Too many countries are experiencing an exponential increase in Covid-19 cases and this is now leading to hospitals and intensive care units being close or having exceeded their capacity limits and we are only in October”, he remarked.
‘We urge leaders to take immediate action to prevent more unnecessary deaths, the collapse of essential health services and the closure of schools,” he said.
