Arrivals of irregular migrants in Spain fell by 52% in April 2019 compared to the same month of the previous year, thanks in particular to cooperation with Morocco, said Thursday the Spanish madia.
This latter echoes data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) that a total of 820 illegal migrants arrived in Spain last April, compared with 1,706 in the same period of 2018, a drop of 52 %.
Citing an authorized source at the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, media notes that this notorious decline is mainly due to the success of the operations of dismantling the smuggling networks, fruit of the security cooperation and information sharing between Morocco and Spain.
The same source noted that these operations have multiplied in recent months, adding that the downward trend in migrant arrivals has been observed since the beginning of the current year.
The same source highlighted the “positive role” of the Kingdom in “containment of migratory pressure”, adding that the decline in arrivals of illegal migrants to the Spanish coast is the automatic result of the decline in the number of exits.
They also highlighted the migratory pressure that Morocco suffers as a transit country, with the presence on its territory of thousands of sub-Saharan migrants waiting to cross the strait to Europe.
