Moroccans felt earthquakes on Sunday that caused great panic in several cities. Tremor magnitudes of 5.3 and 4.2 degrees on the Richter scale have indeed been recorded in the province of Midelt, said the National Institute of Geophysics (ING).
The two tremors, whose epicenter is located in the town of Ennzala, occurred respectively at 22H 56min 52sec and 23H 06min 40sec (GMT + 1), said the National Network for Monitoring and Seismic Warning of ING in a seismic alert bulletin.
Thus, the first tremor felt is 04 km deep, 32.584 ° N latitude and 4.227 ° W longitude, while the second is 5 km deep, latitude 32.571 ° N and 4.185 ° W, adds the same source.
These tremors were felt in Fez, Meknes, Taza, Arfoud, Rabat, Casablanca and several other cities.
In a statement, the director of the national geophysical institute Lahcen Henni indicated that aftershocks are expected this Monday in the province of Midelt but would be less violent than those of Sunday.
“The tremors that hit Midelt on Sunday were so strong that they were felt in several other cities in the Kingdom,” said the official. He added that residents of many regions of Morocco preferred to leave their homes for fear of a tragedy.
