Facebook removes fake accounts in Morocco

Facebook announced on Friday that it had dismantled seven separate networks of fake accounts and pages on its platform, active in Iran, Afghanistan, Egypt, Turkey, Morocco, Myanmar, Georgia and Ukraine due to “coordinated inauthentic behaviors”. Nearly 8,000 pages involved in misleading information and political influence campaigns around the world were disabled in October.

A network of Facebook accounts and pages was operated from Egypt, Turkey and Morocco by individuals linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, targeting countries in the region with terrorism-related content, Facebook said.

The company has cracked down on these types of accounts around the world, following harsh criticism for failing to develop tools quickly enough to tackle extremist content and coordinated propaganda campaigns.
