In view of the kingdom’s efforts, under the guidance of King Mohammed VI, in the protection and enhancement of the Argan tree, an international day for this ancestral tree has just been promulgated by the UN.
It’s official ! Every May 10 will be celebrated around the world on International Argan Day. For this first 2021 edition, Morocco and the UN are jointly organizing a webinair that can be viewed live on United Nations web TV, YouTube and social networks.
The resolution presented by Morocco to the General Assembly of the United Nations was adopted, by consensus of all the member states, on March 3, 2021. It recognizes the efforts of the kingdom in the promotion of the Argan tree as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, and ancestral source of resilient and sustainable development.
“This day is an invitation to learn, share and celebrate this mythical tree. It is also a way of making its culture a lever for socio-economic and sustainable development”, welcomes Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations.
The UN resolution recognizes the contribution of the Argan sector in the implementation of the 17 objectives of the 2030 Agenda, as well as the achievement of sustainable development in its three dimensions: economic, social and environmental. It also puts in the spotlight the role of this sector in the empowerment and emancipation of rural women, the strengthening of the solidarity economy, the eradication of poverty, as well as human development through support of agricultural cooperatives and other forms of organizations in this sector.
