The mandate of the Minuro has been extended for one year and will end on October 31, 2020. The Security Council “decides to extend the mandate of MINURSO until October 31, 2020”, says in the text of the resolution 2494 submitted by the United States.
As in previous years, the resolution recognized the pre-eminence of the autonomy initiative, presented by the Kingdom on 11 April 2007, welcoming the “serious and credible” efforts of Morocco, embodied by the autonomy initiative. The text calls on stakeholders in this regional dispute (Morocco, Algeria, Mauritania and Polisario) to resume consultations with the next personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Sahara. Until then, the next envoy has not been appointed yet.
The same resolution stressed the need to “achieve a realistic, pragmatic and sustainable political solution” to the Sahara issue “which is based on compromise”.
