Moroccan researcher Moncef Slaoui who is co-leading the development of a vaccine against Covid-19 with US General Gustave Perna brandishes the threat of resignation in case he comes under political pressure to bring him to rush the release of vaccines before the end of scientific research.
In an interview, Mr. Moncef expressed his opposition to any political pressure that would force him to release the Covid-19 vaccines before November 3, the day of the US presidential election. He said his research team still faces challenges.
He cites among other things new issues from the FDA, the US Food and Drug Administration, imbalances in the population sample, the change in the geographic location of sites due to the progression of the epidemiology.
His team, he explains, “is currently entering phase III of the research with 30,000 subjects.” He assures that once it has successfully developed a vaccine against Covid-19, an Application for Authorization for Use will have to be filed first. He insists on respecting the procedure in this matter. He also insists that the date of the US presidential election should not have any impact on the vaccine development schedule.
