Morocco must choose between Huawei and Ericsson for the deployment of 5G

Choosing an equipment supplier for the implementation of the first 5G infrastructures in Morocco goes well beyond the technical aspect. It also highlights strategic and geopolitical issues.

While specialists affirm that 5G does not pose a threat to health and the environment, the question of the strategic and geopolitical issues that surround it and the impact of the pandemic on the global economy remains. In this context, Morocco must decide on the operating mode as well as the technical means to deploy for the implementation of 5G in the kingdom, to save the industry and the Internet in the future.

Above all, the Kingdom will have to decide on the crucial question of the choice of the equipment manufacturer who will be responsible for setting up the first 5G infrastructures. And here is the country the subject of a diligent court on the part of two operators.

The strategic marketing director at Huawei Morocco, Chakib Achour does not hide the ambition of his team, to deploy the 5G network as soon as possible with telecom operators “to allow the local digital ecosystem to boost its connectivity and take full advantage of technological and business opportunities linked to the Internet of Things, the cloud, big data and artificial intelligence”.

Likewise, Ericsson Morocco CEO Nora Wahby declared the availability and capacity of his structure to support Morocco for 5G. The delay that the Kingdom takes in appointing the supplier of its choice, suggests that 5G will not be for 2021.

As a reminder, South Korea is currently the country that has invested the most in its deployment of 5G infrastructure. Next come Switzerland, Kuwait, the United States, Qatar and China. China is currently deploying thousands of 5G antennas every week. In France, the first auctions of 5G frequency bands took place from September 29 to October 1, 2020.
