It’s official. The Atlas Lions will play a friendly match against the Gambia selection before their departure for Egypt, host of the 2019 African Cup of Nations.
According to a source in the Royal Moroccan Football Federation, Hervé Renard’s men will face the Scorpions on June 12 in Marrakech. Gambia ranks 163rd out of 211 FIFA affiliates, and does not participate in the African Cup of Nations.
The Moroccan national team should play a second friendly match against a qualified selection for the AfCON. Rumors had announced a match against Nigeria on June 8 in France. Information denied by the Nigerian and Moroccan Federations respectively.
Benin, Guinea, Mauritania and Madagascar have chosen to prepare the Egyptian tournament in Morocco. The FRMF could contact one of them to arrange a friendly meeting before flying to Egypt on June 17th.
The national team will conduct its training camp at the Maâmoura Sports Center in Rabat. Placed in Group D with Ivory Coast, South Africa and Namibia, the Atlas Lions will play their first game in Egypt on June 23 against the Brave Warriors.
