The opportunities offered by the knowledge economy, a new growth engine at the international level, must be seized by Morocco to better build its new development model, said last week in Casablanca, panelists on the occasion of the 4th edition of the Morocco Today Forum (MTF), organized by Le Matin Group.
Speaking at a panel on the theme “New Development Model, What Role for the Knowledge Economy?” Participants discussed the role that the knowledge-based economy can play in the process of building the new development model, from a number of perspectives, including public authorities, regions and businesses. They noted the importance of mastering this new approach, axis of the new paradigm that will have to defend all the forces of the Kingdom.
Thus, the President of the Competition Council Driss Guerraoui has highlighted the significant contribution of intangible capital in the creation of wealth in the Kingdom, confirmed by the Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), noting that this is a very important lesson for the construction of the new development model.
“This should inspire us to completely rethink the indicators around which this new model must be built,” he said, adding that “the challenge of integrating the knowledge economy into the new development model must take into account regional specificities, technological transitions and climate change”.
Quoting reference publications on the subject, Guerraoui said that the new indicators for assessing the new development model relate to openness to innovation, access to the Internet and the state of digital economies infrastructure.
For his part, the Secretary of State for the Minister of Industry in charge of Investment Othman El Ferdaous emphasized the role of education in the mastery of the knowledge economy in order to form the future generations better prepared for this context, emphasizing the importance of building the knowledge economy into a driver of the development model.
