Horst Köhler resigned from his post last Wednesday. This decision of the UN envoy did not fail to react the separatists of the Polisario and to raise their concerns.
Also, the leaders of the puppet Front have appealed to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to quickly appoint a successor “having the same convictions”.
Just as the Polisario says he regrets the decision made by Köhler “who had made great efforts during his mission, in search of a just and fair solution”. In their statement, the separatist leaders also congratulated the now ex-UN envoy, “wishing health, happiness and success in all that he will undertake in the future”.
For its part, the Kingdom wished to express its great regret regarding this unexpected resignation. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation warmly congratulates Horst Köhler, who has been making commendable efforts since his appointment as UN envoy in August 2017. His seriousness and professionalism, in the accomplishment of its mission, have also been highlighted by Morocco.
The statement also reiterates the Kingdom’s support to the UN Secretary General in his mission to seek a resolution of the regional conflict around the Moroccan Sahara. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalls that this resolution can only be a fair and equitable solution. It must be “pragmatic and final, based on a compromise and this, within the framework of the initiative for a status of autonomy” of the provinces of southern Morocco.
To recall that the United Nations had announced the resignation of the German Hors Köhler, special envoy for the Sahara, invoking “reasons of health”.
