The penalty fell. Said Bouteflika, brother of former president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, was sentenced to 15 years in prison according to Algerian media.
Former army general Mohamed Mediene and former general Athmane Tartag were sentenced to 15 years in prison. The same goes for Louisa Hanoune, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party.
The Algerian judiciary has finally sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment in absentia the former defense minister and former army chief Khaled Nezzar, his son Lotfi, as well as Farid Benhamdine, manager of the Algerian Society of pharmacy.
Said Bouteflika and former generals Mohamed Mediene, known as “Toufik”, director of the Algerian secret services for 25 years, Athmane Tartag and the president of the Workers Party, Louisa Hanoune, were persecuted for “undermining the authority of the army” and “conspiracy against the authority of the state”.
General Toufik and Louisa Hanoune appeared before the Blida Military Court on Tuesday, the second day of the trial, and answered all the questions of the military judge.
Monday at the start of the trial, General Tartag refused to appear and Said Bouteflika refused to answer the judge’s questions and decided to leave the room.
