Singapore opens honorary consulate in Casablanca

A reception was given on Tuesday evening in Casablanca, on the occasion of the official inauguration of the Honorary Consulate General of Singapore in the metropolis, in the presence of an audience of public officials and private operators.

Among the distinguished personalities who attended this ceremony, it is necessary to quote the wali of the region of Casablanca-Settat, governor of the prefecture of Casablanca, Said Ahmidouch, the president of the Council of the region, Mustapha Bakkoury, the president from the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), Chakib Alj, the president and CEO of the Attijariwafa Bank group, Mohamed El Kettani, and the president of the Cosumar group, Mohamed Fikrat.

Last December, Mohamed Horani, president and chief executive officer of Hightech Payment Systems (HPS), was appointed by the government of the Republic of Singapore to the post of honorary consul general in Casablanca, with jurisdiction for the entire national territory. The opening of this representation is likely to strengthen economic and cultural ties between Morocco and Singapore, given the strategic position of the two countries on their respective continents.

During the reception, Horani said he was “honored” by the trust placed in him by the Singapore authorities, stressing that the mission of the consulate will be to work “to give new impetus to relations” between the two countries.

“My role goes beyond administrative functions. It is indeed a question of concentrating on initiatives which will make it possible to develop cooperation between the two countries”, he specified, recalling that Singapore “has made giant steps in terms of development, multiplying their GDP/inhabitant per 100 in 50 years”.

Horani, who highlighted Morocco’s major advances in reform and development, stressed that the Kingdom and Singapore have several common denominators, which he believes will help strengthen bilateral relations in the various fields, especially the economy and culture.

For his part, the non-resident ambassador of Singapore to Morocco, George Goh, said that this consulate will bring to 33, the number of consulates opened by Singapore in 29 countries, reviewing the performing sectors in his country and the possibilities with which it abounds.

He praised the quality of bilateral relations between Morocco and his country, saying that the inauguration of this honorary consulate will further deepen these ties.
