Spanish government approves granting of Cervantes Theater in Tangier as a gift to Morocco

The Spanish government approved a decision on Friday to give Morocco irrevocably the Grand Theater (Cervantes), which is located in the city of Tangier.

A Spanish government statement said the Spanish cabinet had adopted a resolution authorizing the signing and provisional application of the protocol that brings together Spain and Morocco on the irrevocable donation of the Cervantes Theater in Tangier.

The decision was adopted by the Spanish government today after the offer, which was the Moroccan government has submitted to the restoration of this building and maintenance and supervision of the management in exchange for ownership with the commitment to preserve the Spanish character in the cultural program of this institution.

The theater will be transferred to Morocco through a protocol which, according to its terms and contents, will be an international agreement, which will be approved by the Spanish Parliament in both chambers (the House of Representatives and the Senate).

The Spanish government said that the Grand Theater (Cervantes) in Tangier is one of the most important cultural buildings in the city of Bogaz, noting that it has a very important architectural value and needs restoration and maintenance in order to preserve it as a cultural heritage.
