Start of the National HIV Testing Campaign

The Ministry of Health is organizing from November 25 to December 25 the 9th national campaign for screening for the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), under the slogan “Early detection for a generation without AIDS”.

Initiated with the support of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and in partnership with thematic NGOs and the general delegation to the prison administration and reintegration, within the framework of the implementation of the National Strategic Plan to Fight AIDS (2017 -2021), this campaign aims to revive the dynamics of HIV testing, launch the plan to eliminate HIV transmission and congenital syphilis from mother to child, to anchor the national HIV testing strategy and to incorporate early syphilis testing in pregnant women as part of the prenatal consultation, the ministry said in a statement.

It targets 260,000 HIV tests and 67,000 syphilis tests for pregnant women and their spouses, patients for TB, patients with symptoms of HIV infection, and those seeking sexually transmitted infections to partners and families of people living with HIV (PLHIV), prisoners, as well as all those wishing to take an HIV test, and this at the level of public health structures, community, and penitentiary, specifies the same source.

The 2017-2021 National AIDS Strategic Plan aims to reduce new HIV infections by 75%, and AIDS-related mortality by 60% by 2021, to eliminate HIV transmission and to reduce the risk of HIV infection from mother-to-child syphilis, reduce HIV-related stigma and discrimination, and improve the governance of the national response to this disease.
