Tourism: Increase of 8.5% at the end of November

Nearly 11.3 million tourists visited Morocco between January and November 2018, an increase of 8.5% compared to the same period the previous year (+ 15% for foreign tourists and + 2% for Moroccans residing abroad), according to the Tourism Observatory.

The main issuing markets saw an increase in arrivals during this period, particularly Italy and Germany (+ 15% and + 10% respectively), followed by France and Spain (+ 8% and + 6% respectively), says the observatory in a note on tourism statistics in Morocco for the month of November 2018.

Regarding the total nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments classified, they recorded an evolution of 8.4% for the first eleven months of 2018 (+ 12% for TES and + 1% for MRE), falls the same source, noting that the two tourist hubs Marrakesh and Agadir alone generated 60% of the total nights at the end of November 2018.

These two destinations, adds the observatory, posted respective increases of 10% and 8%, while other destinations posted good performances, in particular Fez (+ 17%), Rabat (+ 10%) and Tangier (+ 10%). For the month of November 2018 alone, data provided by the Directorate General of National Security (DGSN) show that the number of arrivals of tourists at border posts has increased by 14% compared to November 2017 (+19 % for the TES and +6% for the MRE), indicates the observatory, indicating that the main issuing markets have recorded very positive results, in particular the United States (+ 23%) and Italy (+ 24% ), followed by Germany (+ 17%), France (+ 15%), Spain (+ 12%) and Belgium (+ 12%).

At the same time, according to data from tourism accommodation professionals, the volume of overnight stays in classified establishments rose by 3% in November 2018 (+ 4% for non-resident tourists and -1% for residents), the same source said, adding that the destinations Fez (+ 7%), Rabat (+ 3%), Marrakesh (3%) and Agadir (+ 3%) performed well, while Casablanca and Tangier stagnated.
