Pandemic: the word is posed. The new coronavirus, which has infected more than 110,000 people worldwide since the end of December, can officially be called a “pandemic”, announced the World Health Organization (WHO).
“We felt that Covid-19 can be characterized as a pandemic,” said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus at a press conference in Geneva.
The word “pandemic” refers to an epidemic that is spreading worldwide. This situation “supposes that the whole world population (is) susceptible to being exposed to an infection and that a part of it (can) potentially fall ill”, had explained at the end of February Dr. Michael Ryan, director of the program for WHO emergencies.
In his address on Wednesday, the Director-General of WHO expressed deep concern over the “alarming levels of inaction” by the international community in the face of the “alarming levels of spread” of the epidemic.
