3000 athletes expected at The 2nd International Fes Marathon

The second edition of the International Marathon of Fes will take place, on January 6, at the initiative of the “Elite Running Club” Association, with the participation of Moroccan and foreign athletes.

Some 3,000 athletes should take part in this sporting event, after a first “successful” edition, announced the organizers during a press briefing, held yesterday in Fes.

In a statement, the technical director of the marathon, Abderrahim Bouramdane emphasized that this edition will be marked by the participation of Ethiopian and Kenyan athletes with ambition to break the record of the first edition, adding that this sporting event aims to encourage the practice of sport in the city of Fes.

The Fes Marathon is “a boon” for the spiritual capital as it contributes to boosting economic and tourism activity, he said, noting that it will also be an opportunity to highlight the historical and patrimonial wealth of the city.

The general secretary of the organizing association, Challouli Rachid, said that the main objective is to provide Fes, a World Heritage city, with a marathon of quality that has nothing to envy to those organized at the national level, calling on the inhabitants of Fes to participate massively in this event.

Placed under the sign of “quality”, this international event aims to promote sport at the regional level, to discover new athletes and to contribute to the tourist promotion of the spiritual capital.

The first International Marathon of Fes disputed over a distance of 42 km, was won at the men’s, by the Moroccan Khalil Lemsiyeh with a time of 2h17mn35sec. In the women’s race, first place went to Sanae El Mansouri from Fes (2h45mn24sec).

The marathon which foresees a race of 10 km, a half-marathon and a marathon, is organized by the Association “Elite Running Club” and the wilaya of Fes-Meknes in partnership with the region of Fes-Meknes and the commune from Fes.
