In a fire that occurred last Sunday on board off the Finistere, in the Brittany region (extreme west of France), the ship flying the Italian flag Grande America sank on Tuesday afternoon, about 180 nautical miles (333 km) west of the French coast, announced the Maritime Prefecture of the Atlantic.
“The Great America was under fire since the evening of Sunday, March 10, the violence of which has increased during the last 24 hours. The ship had on its right side a steep slope that has worsened over time,” said the same source on its website.
“Tuesday, March 12, 2019, at 15:26, the Italian ship Grande America sank by 4600 meters bottom,” said the prefecture.
Coming from Hamburg and bound for Casablanca, the hybrid ship, between a ro-ro and a 214-meter container ship, declared a fire on board, while it was about 142 nautical miles (approximately 263 kilometers) in the south-west of Penmarc’h Point (southern Finistère).
Announcing at first to have mastered the fire and want to go to the Spanish port of Corunna, the commander of the ship had informed, shortly before midnight, the maritime authorities of the deterioration of the situation while several containers were on fire, before deciding shortly after 02H00 to abandon the ship, aboard a single lifeboat.
The twenty-six crew members and one passenger of the ship were all rescued and it was around 4:00, that a British frigate, who had been rerouted on area, recovered on board the 27 people, “all healthy and save,” reported the Atlantic Maritime Prefecture.
