Said Bouteflika, brother and former advisor to the resigned Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika, and two former generals were placed in custody on Sunday, the military prosecutor’s office in Blida (south of Algiers) said.
In a statement read on state television, the prosecution said that Said Bouteflika, Mohamed Mediene, who led the Algerian secret service for 25 years, and his successor Athmane Tartag, former intelligence coordinator, are being prosecuted for “attack on the authority of the army”and “conspiracy against the authority of the State”.
“For the purposes of the investigation, the military prosecutor charged a military investigating judge with initiating the investigation procedure and after being charged with the offense, the latter issued warrants for detention on remand of three defendants,” said the same source.
