Algeria: Date of the presidential election now fixed

We now know the date of the next Algerian presidential election. The acting president, Abdelkader Bensalah, has announced on Wednesday that the election will be held on July 4th.

“The head of state, Abdelkader Bensalah, has convened the electorate for the presidential election to be held on July 4, thus setting in motion the process that will fill the institutional void born of the resignation of the president of the Republic, Abdelaziz Bouteflika”, reports the Algerian media.

They added: “The convocation of the electoral body comes after the meeting of the two chambers of the Parliament which took note of the declaration of definitive vacancy of the post of President of the Republic, in application of the provisions of Article 102 of the Constitution, under which the President of the Council of the Nation assumes the functions of Head of State for a period of 90 days”.

It should be noted that Bensalah announced Tuesday the creation “in priority and urgency”, in consultation with the political class and the civil society, of a collegial national institution, which will have as mission to gather the conditions of organization of national elections “Honest and transparent”.

For his part, General Ahmed Gaïd Salah, Deputy Minister of National Defense, Chief of Staff of the National People’s Army (ANP), announced on Wednesday that the Algerian army will oversee the period of preparation of the elections and ensure the passage of the presidential elections in “the strict respect of the rules of transparency and integrity and the laws of the Republic”.
