Hicham El Guerrouj has just lost another record. Yomif Kejelcha of Ethiopia sprayed the world record in the Mile (03mn 48s 45/100), held by former Moroccan champion Hicham El Guerrouj since February 12, 1997, on Sunday (March 3rd) at a university meeting in Boston.
Kejelcha managed to beat, 22 years later, this famous record by realizing a time of 03mn 47 sec 01/100.
Recall that another Ethiopian, Samuel Tefera (19 years), had beaten on Saturday February 16 in Birmingham (England) the record of the indoor 1500 meters which was also held by Hicham El Guerrouj.
The latter, however, holds other records. He is the current holder of outdoor world records in the 1500m (03’26″00), mile (03’43″13) and 2000m (04’44″79).
