Bouteflika announces his resignation

Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika will resign “before April 28, the date of the end of his term of office,” said a statement of the Presidency of the Republic, made public Monday, April 1, 2019 late afternoon.

However, before his resignation, the Algerian head of state should take “important measures to ensure the continuity of the functioning of state institutions during the transition period”.

The statement said President Bouteflika’s nomination of a new government on Sunday “will be followed by important decisions he will make, in accordance with constitutional provisions, to ensure the continuity of state institutions during the transition period”.

The Algerian presidency has noted that this transitional period will start on the date on which Abdelaziz Bouteflika will decide his resignation.
