Cinema: Tickets and receipts down

After a recovery in 2017, admissions in theaters have declined in 2018, according to data unveiled Saturday in Tangier by the Moroccan Cinema Center (CCM).

Indeed, 1,562,350 entries were recorded in 2018 against 1,674,563 a year earlier, a decrease of 7%. This is the second lowest cumulative since 2013, according to CCM figures. In total, cinemas generated 73.12 million box office receipts, a figure also down 1.3%.

Last year, some 30 feature-length films were produced in Morocco, 19 of which benefited from an advance on receipts estimated at more than 65 million dirhams. Added to this is the production of 111 short films, 35 television series, 18 TV movies and 163 commercials, says the CCM on the sidelines of the 20th edition of the Tangier National Film Festival (FNFT).

Three Moroccan films (“Lahnech”, “Korsa” and “Razzia”) were ranked at the top 3 box office of the first 30 films, all nationalities combined, representing 37% in number of entries and 33.3% in receipts window on all 30 first films, CCM added.
