Doctors declare war on virginity tests

Several doctors in Morocco have launched a campaign to fight the practice of tests to assess the virginity of women.

A large number of Moroccan doctors in both sectors, private and public, reject this practice and consider that the virginity test has no scientific basis. They call to no longer issue certificates of virginity, especially before marriage.

They believe that this practice is a violation of women’s freedom and their rights. These tests present a great danger. Doctors explain that they can damage the genitals, cause infections and serious bleeding, which can push the woman to suicide if the test fails.

Moreover, no law imposes the presentation of such a certificate at the time of the drafting of the marriage certificate. Remember that the World Health Organization (WHO) and the UN called on all countries to put an end to these practices.
