The European Commission announced its intention to impose a visa on US citizens wishing to travel to the Schengen space from 2021.
“Beginning in 2021, citizens of the United States of America will have to obtain a visa” at a time when they can now travel to European space without them for up to 90 days, according to a statement issued by the European System of Information and Travel Permits. The same source explained that the validity of the visa will extend for three years and will enable the holder to enter the country “whenever necessary.”
According to the same source, the visa application decision is part of efforts to improve security and “avoid any additional problem associated with illegal immigration and terrorism”.
The European System of Information and Travel Permits, created by the European Commission with a view to ensuring border security in the Union space, posted on its website a comprehensive list of countries that would apply this procedure.
