The Israeli Defense Minister is expected in Morocco next week on November 24 and 25. In Rabat, Benny Gantz and the Deputy Minister in charge of the National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi, will sign a memorandum to define the framework for defense cooperation between the two countries.
Several international media had reported on Tel Aviv’s readiness to the kingdom’s plans to develop an arms industry. Morocco has a particular interest in Israeli drones of the Harop type, which had already proved their worth last year during the war between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
The visit of Benny Gantz to Morocco was announced, for the first time, by the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Bourita, on the occasion of the virtual meeting of September 17 to which Antony Blinken had called to celebrate the first anniversary of the Abraham’s accords. During his speech, the foreign minister also revealed the visit of the Israeli Minister of Economy to the kingdom.
As a reminder, Morocco and Israel concluded an agreement on cybersecurity last July in Rabat. The signing ceremony was attended by Yigal Unna, the Director General of the Israeli Cyber Directorate, his Moroccan counterpart General El Mostafa Rabiî, and the Minister Delegate in charge of the National Defense Administration, Abdellatif Loudiyi.
Morocco restored diplomatic relations with Israel on December 10, 2020. Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid visited the kingdom already last August.
