The UN special envoy for the Sahara is preparing to resume his pilgrim’s baton. Indeed, Horst Kohler is about to prepare a new meeting between the parties concerned by the conflict around the Sahara: Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria and Polisario.
This second round will take place next March. Remember that the first round took place in Geneva in December of last year.
The beginnings of these new negotiations took place behind the scenes of the last African Union Summit, which was held in Addis Ababa in mid-February.
Recall that the German Ambassador to the UN, Christoph Heusgen, said that the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General remains “very committed” to this issue and he has reiterated before the Security Council his willingness to succeed to “a realistic, practical and sustainable solution” to the question of the Moroccan Sahara.
