Marathon des Sables/2nd stage: First victory for Mohamed El Morabity

Moroccan Mohamed El Morabity signs, Monday, April 8, 2019 in Kourci Dial Zaid (Errachidia province), his first victory of the 34th edition of the Marathon des sables, during the 2nd stage of the competition, ahead of his brother Rachid by a few seconds.

The brothers El Morabity impose, as every year, their rhythm for the Marathon des Sables by chaining the victories step by step, suggesting the continuation of the domination of the two brothers on the trail. For this 2nd stage linking Tisserdimine and Kourci Dial Zaid for a distance of 32.5 km, Mohamed El Morabity beat his elder Rachid by a few seconds with a time of 2h52min30sec. The third time (2h56min14sec) was recorded by Abdelkader El Mouaziz during this particularly challenging stage with a wide area of dunes.

The surprise of the day was signed by the Frenchman Merile Robert, who arrived 10th in the 1st stage, crossed the finish line with a time of 3h04min02sec by placing in 4th place of this 2nd stage.

“I was first before the dunes,” said the Frenchman who was caught by the brothers El Morabity and El Mouaziz, noting that for the rest of the course, we had to fight the wind effectively. Satisfied with his performance during this stage, Robert remarked that “the gap was not huge” between him and the first-comers, being confident about the rest of the competition.

Gathering thousands of runners from all over the world, the Marathon des Sables, which runs until April 15th, gives an annual rendezvous to lovers of trail running and extreme sports, with the goal of walking approximately 220 km on 6 stages, in the heart of the breathtaking landscape of the southern Moroccan desert. During their crossing, the riders will have to fight against the sand, the wind and the heat and will have to adapt to the rigorous conditions imposed by this competition.
