Marrakesh will vibrate this Sunday at the rhythm of the 30th edition of its International Marathon. An appointment that has become a must for many riders who are preparing for the new season and looking to combine business with pleasure by taking advantage of one of the most beautiful sports and tourist destinations in the world.
Placed under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, the 30th edition of the MIM will see the participation of about 9000 athletes, professionals and amateurs, from around the globe and representing some sixty countries, including some 50 top runners.
Among the favorites on the men’s side are Kenyans Chelimo Nicholas Kipkorir (2h07min38s) and David Tarus (2h09min00s), Moroccan Salah Eddine Bounasr (2h08min25s) and Ethiopian Terefi Fikadu Girma (2h09min34s), alongside other athletes Moroccans and foreigners from Spain and France.
On the women’s side, the Chinese Yinli He (2h27min35s), the Kenyan Monica Cheruto (2h29min16s) and Kiprotich Cladys Jepkorir (2h30min01s) and the Ethiopian Asefa Mulunesh Zewdu (2h30min35s) will be serious contenders for the title at this edition which will also know the participation of the main Moroccan athletes, notably Kalthoum Bouasria (2h38min08s) and Sanaa El Mansouri (2h39min06s).
As for the half marathon, the Moroccan athletes will try to confirm the Moroccan domination at the last editions, like Hicham Amghar (1h00min23s), Mohammed Reda El Aaraby (1h0min38s) or Mustapha El Aziz (1h00min41s).
Ladies’ side, Rkia El Moukim (1h09min33s), Sanaa Achahbar (1h10min30s) and Hajiba El Hasnaoui are among the favorites.
On the sidelines of this event, a race of 3.5 km will be organized for the benefit of school children, aged 10 to 13, Saturday morning from 10:30. It will be an opportunity for these aspiring athletes to discover the setting of a high level international competition, to share fun moments with top runners and to meet renowned athletes.
It will also be an opportunity for the organizers to raise awareness about the protection of the environment. In this sense, a day without a car is one of the priorities of the initiators of this sporting event, the objective being to offer runners, visitors and inhabitants of the ocher city, the opportunity to breathe clean air, far from the pollution which for some time has affected this city, once known for its gardens, olive groves and palm groves.
Note that the start of the marathon will take place at 8:30.
