Marrakesh dresses in sports colors for this beginning of the year. First with the fifth season of Formula E scheduled last weekend. A fully electric championship that occurs in the heart of cities. For the edition of the city ocher, drivers like Vergne, Buemi, Piquet, Lopez, Di Grassi are expected, just like the Brazilian Felipe Massa, who has just signed with Venturi, and has a total of 11 wins in Formula 1 at Ferrari.
On the manufacturers side, the race has more manufacturers and brands than any other series. With names such as Audi, DS, Jaguar, Mahindra and NIO, Formula E this season has nine manufacturers including Nissan, which takes over the existing acquisition of Renault, and the connection of BMW with Andretti. This confirms the growing interest in this Formula E and where Marrakesh is positioned in a good position.
Another long-awaited sports race in the Ocher City is the Marrakesh International Marathon, which is celebrating its 30th edition. There are nearly 9,000 marathoners to participate in the edition scheduled for 27 January. The oldest and largest race in Africa has become the inescapable date of all the stars of this beautiful sport.
Riders from around the globe are expected including renowned foreign and Moroccan athletes who have confirmed their participation. Among them, Kenyans Chelimo Nicholas Kipkorir and David Tarus, Moroccan Salah Eddine Bounasr, Ethiopian Terefi Fikadu as well as champions of Spain and France. The annual event takes place in two stages.
A professional marathon of 42 km and a half-marathon with a distance of 21 km with refreshment points installed every 5 km and on arrival. The event in Marrakesh will have to end with several prizes for the marathon and the half marathon.
And as every year, a race of 3.5 km will be organized the day before the marathon for the benefit of school children aged 10 to 13 years. 1,500 schoolchildren take part in it, in order to teach children a taste for physical effort and perseverance. But the event is not only sports. It also attracts national and international tourists.
The flat and fast route, passing through the main tourist sites of the city, is a considerable asset. This is how the two races open the ball of entertainment in the tourist town in a period of low season. Marrakesh needs a more consistent schedule of major events throughout the year to make the various infrastructures of the city profitable.
