Moroccans consume 26 billion plastic bags a year

The Moroccan Minister of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, Moulay Hafid Elalamy, said that Moroccans annually consume 26 billion plastic bags, an average of 800 bags per Moroccan per year.

“We have allocated a fund worth 200 million dirhams to keep pace with the manufacturers and support them to turn their activities into non-polluting bags,” Elalamy said.

The minister added that the fund to keep pace with the manufacturers of plastic bags so far has spent 75 million dirhams to support the manufacturers, who turned their activities to produce bags environmentally friendly.

A few weeks ago, the government of Saad Eddine ElOthmani approved a change to complete a law banning the manufacture, import, marketing and use of bags of plastic, which the government had previously approved before the three deputies to come back and tighten the penalties after registering a deficiency in the previous law to eliminate plastic bags permanently.

The project, which was submitted by the Ministry of Industry, Investment, Trade and Digital Economy, aims to lift the penalties and add new penalties to those who produce and distribute plastic bags that are prohibited in the unorganized sector.
