Morocco’s Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit said on Monday that the perpetrators of the murder of foreign tourists last week in southern Morocco “were filled with extremist ideas.” “It is not about a large terrorist organization, but individuals who have sat up with extremist ideology and have decided to commit their crime by means of simulating terrorist elements,” he added during a hearing at the House of Representatives, adding that 17 suspects had been arrested.
He noted that the use of terrorists to change their strategy by adopting the logic of “individual wolves” in the implementation of their crimes was the result of the efforts of the security authorities to crack down on terrorist groups, which limited their capabilities.
Laftit stressed the condemnation of the Moroccan people for this barbaric act, “which is incompatible with its values,” pointing out that the first step to overcoming terrorism is to protect society from the dangers of exploiting religion for “despicable” purposes.
The Moroccan security authorities announced on December 17 the killing of two foreign tourists, one from Norway and the other from Denmark on the outskirts of Marrakech by “extremist” suspects.
