Dutch international Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool) was elected by the Premier League players’ association as best player of the season on Sunday (April 28th).
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk was named player of the year 2019 by the English Professional Players’ Association on Sunday at his annual London gala.
Van Dijk, who succeeds his team-mate Mohamed Salah, was favored by Premier League players Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling.
A consolation prize for 24-year-old Sterling: he won the Young Player of the Year award, along with his team-mate Leroy Sané, in 2018.
Van Dijk, 27, joined Liverpool in January 2018 against 75 million pounds (87 million euros) from Southampton.
This very complete, physically strong and technically comfortable player, helped to strengthen the defense of Liverpool, fighting for the title of champion of England with Manchester City (one point less than the Citizens), including 19 meetings without taking a goal (20 goals conceded in 36 games, two less than City), and qualified for the semi-finals of the Champions League.
On the women’s side, Vivianne Miedema (Arsenal) took away the player of the year award after scoring 22 goals for the Gunners, who earned their first title since 2012.
