It’s now official. FIFA has abandoned its plan for a World Cup 2022 to 48 teams, announced a statement from the governing body of international football on Wednesday.

The 2022 World Cup, to be held in Qatar from 21 November to 18 December, will see the participation of only 32 teams.

“In accordance with the conclusions of the feasibility study approved by the FIFA Council at its last meeting, FIFA and Qatar have explored together all possibilities to increase the number of participating teams from 32 to 48 teams by involving the neighboring countries at the FIFA World Cup ™, Qatar 2022”, details the FIFA statement.

They added: “Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process involving all relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be implemented now”.

The passage of the number of participating selections to the World Cup from 32 to 48, will be done at the World Cup 2026, which will be organized jointly by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
