The allocation of CAN 2019 to Egypt, replacing Cameroon, continues to spark debate. South Africa, which had also applied to host the continental competition, denounced a “political” decision.
On a local radio station in Johannesburg, the president of the South African Football Federation (SAFA), Russell Paul, said that “technically, there is no better country in Africa than South Africa to host the Africa Cup of Nations”.
And to add: “We have no problem with Egypt but with the way and the process (of attribution) has taken place”.
According to a CAF ally, Mandela’s country was punished by the continental football body for having preferred to that of the Kingdom the North American joint bid for the organization of the 2026 World Cup.
Remember that Egypt was designated, Tuesday, the organizing country of the CAN 2019, which will take place from June 15 to July 13.
As a reminder, the CAF decided on November 30, 2018 to withdraw the organization of CAN 2019 in Cameroon. CAF inspectors had conducted a security inspection and inspection of infrastructure, stadiums and accommodation, which demonstrated the country’s inability to host the planned CAN next summer with 24 teams hired instead of 16.
