The first edition of Pro Taghazout Bay will soon start at Pointe des Ancres, one of the jewels of the coast of southern Morocco. This stage of the Qualifying Series 2020 of the World Surf League will take place from January 25 to February 1 with a list of participants who promises a week of very high level.
Supported by the Royal Moroccan Surf Federation, the Souss Massa Region, the Moroccan National Tourist Office, Afriquia Gaz, Fairmont Residences Taghazout Bay, Maroc Telecom, Aïn Atlas, Sol House, Surfrider Fondation Maroc and Surf Report Maroc, the event promises to be an unmissable event in the qualification process for surfers aiming for the Championship Tour next season.
Ranked QS5,000, the second most important category of the Qualifying Series in 2020, the Pro Taghazout Bay is one of the most anticipated competitions on the calendar, alongside the Pipeline in Hawaii, on the island of Hainan in China, or again by Fernando De Noronha in Brazil.
Attracting some of the best surfers on the planet, Pro Taghazout Bay will see the participation of Kanoa Igarashi (JPN), Frederico Morais (PRT) and big wave surf star Kai Lenny (HAW). On the Moroccan side, eyes will be on the performance of Ramzi Boukhiam. Considered the best professional surfer in Morocco, Boukhiam has an impressive track record: a place as vice-champion of the world junior 2013 and recent victories in the Qualifying Series of Zarautz, Anglet and Lacanau.
The Moroccan surf ambassador, qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, will be accompanied by Redouane Regragui, Aboubakar Bouaouda, Selyann Zouhir and Neil Aboufiras, as well as Othmane Choufani and Abdel El Harim, among others.
“We thank the corporate citizens and institutions that are engaged in this process of development of the discipline, in particular the ONMT, the Souss Massa Region and Taghazout Bay,” said Mohammed Kadmiri, President of the Royal Moroccan Federation of Surfing. “Surfing is a major pole of attraction for the region, cultural and tourist management is therefore essential for the development of surfing here.”
“The Taghazout Resort Development and Promotion Corporation has put sustainable development at the heart of its strategy,” said a Taghazout Bay representative. “It is a new generation resort based on sports and leisure with a golf academy, tennis and football fields, and of course surfing. This event is therefore very important for Taghazout Bay which is one of the main sponsors of the competition.”
