As part of the implementation of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, text ratified by the Kingdom of Morocco, the Ministry of Culture and Communication – Culture Department – monitors, following a specific program, the careful preparation of nomination files for the components of the intangible cultural heritage for inscription on the Lists of the Organization.
As a continuation of this project, which is part of the enhancement of the Moroccan cultural heritage and its promotion abroad, the Ministry undertakes the preparation of new files at the national level or through joint initiatives with States with similar patrimonial configuration.
Thus, the implementation of the “Tbourida” file is made in partnership with the Royal Society of Horse Encouragement (SOREC) and the Moroccan Royal Federation of Equestrian Sports, then it was proceeded formally to the filing of the application file with UNESCO.
Within the national heritage, “Tbourida” is a major component of horse-related practices. Rightly, this equestrian art, deeply rooted in Moroccan culture, is associated with both national and regional festivities. It also crystallizes multiple dimensions of intangible cultural heritage, including rituals, skills and know-how relating to traditional dress, craftsmanship, besides the inseparable oral legacy of this equestrian practice and the horse.
This inscription by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity is thus included in the Committee’s program for the next two years.
