The body recovered from the wreckage of the missing plane on Jan. 21 over the Channel was that of Argentinian footballer Emiliano Sala, the police in Dorset County, south-west England, announced Thursday evening.
“The body brought back to Portland today has been formally identified by the Dorset coroner as that of footballer Emiliano Sala,” the police said on Twitter. “The families of Sala and pilot David Ibbotson have been informed. Our thoughts are for all of them”.
The coroner “will continue to investigate the circumstances of this death,” police said.
The Piper Malibu carcass, which took the 28-year-old former Nantes striker to his new club in Cardiff, was found on Sunday at the spot where the plane stopped broadcasting in the English Channel. It was located 67.7 meters deep, about twenty kilometers north of the island of Guernsey.
The reasons for the accident are still unknown, but the British Air Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) hopes to shed light on this drama as soon as possible.
