Thousands of people gathered in central Algiers Friday, chanting slogans hostile to the candidacy of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, algerian media said.
At midday, waves of men and women, brandishing or draped in Algerian flags, continued to converge on the Place de la Grande Poste, an emblematic building in the heart of Algiers, joining the thousands already there present. Massive new demonstrations are planned, for the third consecutive Friday, across Algeria, despite the risks of chaos stirred Thursday by the head of state, in a message addressed to his fellow citizens on the occasion of the International Day of the Woman of March 8th.
“No 5th term, eh Bouteflika!” Sang the protesters. Many motorists circulated open horn, a mode of protest recently appeared in Algiers, and residents have hung on their balcony Algerian flags – green and white, struck in the center of the crescent and the red star.
The ranks of the protesters are expected to grow after Friday’s weekly prayer.
