Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Morocco to the UN in New York, was elected President of the UNICEF Board of Directors for the year 2019.
The election of Hilale follows the endorsement of the Group of African States in the United Nations.
Technically, the UNICEF Executive Board is the governing body overseeing all the activities of this UN agency. It ensures, in particular, that the Organization’s operational projects for children meet the needs and priorities of the beneficiary countries and correspond to the guidelines set out by the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. as well as international instruments on the rights of the child.
This new responsibility devolving to Morocco at the head of the UNICEF Board of Directors, during the year 2019, is of particular importance given the various important and high-level deadlines on the agenda of this body.
It also coincides with the celebration, this year, of the thirtieth anniversary of the adoption of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which will be marked by the organization of high-level events at the next session of the the General Assembly of the United Nations, from next September.
