VAR: What is planned for AfCON 2019

The video assistance to arbitration (VAR) will be used in the quarterfinals of the Nations Football Cup (AfCON), scheduled for June 21 to July 19 in Egypt, said an official of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

This announcement was made to the press by the chairman of the committee of referees CAF, the Djibouti Suleiman Waberi. Thus, the technique of video assistance to arbitration (VAR) will be used neither during the group stage nor in the second round of this championship which knows for the first time the participation of 24 African selections.

Many of the referees who officiate AfCON matches have benefited from intense training sessions on the use of the VAR technique.

The VAR technique was tested in the quarter-finals of the Nations Local Football Championship, held in 2018 in Morocco and in the final of the African Champions League.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled, on April 19, the list of 56 referees who carry out a training camp from April 28 to May 05 in Rabat in perspective of the finals of the African Cup of Nations which will hold in Egypt.
