Algeria is Africa’s arms import champion, and everyone knows it!
With a defense budget of 8.6 Billion euros in 2017, Algeria is becoming the continent as the African country devoting the most financial resources to military activities.
Algerian expenditures in this area are mainly supported by revenues from the oil and gas windfall, which allows the country as “champion of arms imports in Africa”.
This “level of militarization” of Algeria can be explained in particular by “the pursuit of an ambition of regional hegemony” and “its historical rivalry with the Kingdom of Morocco”.
In this context, NGOs calls on European Union countries exporting their arms to Algeria to take into consideration “the potential harmful effect of these sales” and the danger posed by “the constant accumulation of weapons” in the country.
